Open the Eyes of my Heart Lord

This very short worship chorus, which asks God for the gift of sight with which to really see Jesus.   It is related to  Ephesians 1:18 (I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened ...) and Mark 8:22-25, when Jesus heals a blind man.

The words were written by American Christian music artist, worship leader, and singer-songwriter, Paul Baloche (b.1962).

The song has been recorded by a number of prominent Christian artists, including Michael W Smith (who is sometimes, incorrectly, credited as the composer), and Randy Travis.

It has been translated into many languages, including:
  • Spanish (Abre los ojos de mi corazón, Señor)
  • Portuguese (Abre os olhos do meu coração, Senhor)
  • Polish (Otwórz me oczy o Panie)
  • Dutch (Schijn met Uw Licht in Mijn Hart, Hee).

The unnamed tune, also by Baloche has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of C, the first few notes are EGG G G EG G E_.

Lyrics

The chorus has the following two short verses:   they have been arranged an many different ways by recording artists, but each verse is kept complete, sometimes with individual lines being frequently repeated.

1. Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
Open the eyes of my heart,
I want to see You, I want to see You.

2. To see You high and lifted up
Shining in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy.
