How Shall I Sing to God (This is my song, I'll sing it with love)

This is a hymn about loving God and neighbour, which used a musical metaphor for living a Christian life.

The words were written by English theologian, minister (United Reformed Church, then free-lance) and hymn-writer Brian A. Wren (b 1936), and first published by Hope Publishing Co. in 1986.

Tunes it is set to include:
  • WEAVER MILL by American Methodist minister, teacher, and composer, Joan Collier Sanchez, nee Fogg (1948-2020) - and SATB and SSAA choir settings by Lloyd Larson have been published
  • HOPE (Haas) by now-discredited American Catholic composer David Haas (b 1957).

A number of sources incorrectly credit the entire hymn to Haas.  This is unfortunate (see here for information about this):  Although he composed a tune and released a recording that became popular (and is featured on many videos) - the original work is not his, and the alternative tune is now becoming more widely known.

Hymnals where the hymn has been published include:
  • Gather Comprehensive, GIA Publications, USA, 1994 - set to HOPE
  • The Book of Praise, The Presbyterian Church in Canada, Canada, 1997 - set to WEAVER MILL
  • Together in Song: Australian hymn book II, Harper Collins Religious, Victoria, Australia, 1999 - set to WEAVER MILL.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
1 How shall I sing to God when life is filled with gladness ...

Chorus:
This is my song, I'll sing it with love.

2 How shall I sing to God when life is filled with bleakness ...

3 How shall I sing to God and tell my Saviour's story:

KEEP IN CASE ORIGINAL IS REMOVED, BUT DO NOT DISPLAY 1 How shall I sing to God
when life is filled with gladness,
loving and birth, wonder and worth?
I'll sing from the heart,
thankfully receiving, joyful in believing.

Chorus:
This is my song, I'll sing it with love.

2 How shall I sing to God
when life is filled with bleakness,
empty and chill, breaking my will?
I'll sing through my pain,
angrily or aching, crying or complaining

3 How shall I sing to God
and tell my Saviour's story:
Passover bread, life from the dead?
I'll sing with my life,
witnessing and giving, risking and forgiving.
