Thy Word (is a lamp unto my feet)

This worship-song style hymn is about the word of God as guidance in the Christian life. The words are based on sections of Psalm 119:105-112. The opening phrase is a direct quote from the King James translation, viz “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

It was written in 1984 by American evangelical / popular singer-songwriter and musician Amy Lee Grant (b 1960) and her colleague and music collaborator, American singer-songwriter, musician and worship leader, Michael W (Whitaker) Smith (b 1957).

It is set to an unnamed tune, written by Smith. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of F, the first few notes of the melody are F_ C CF GG GG AA_ AGF_ AG FF_ with accompanying chords F | C | C/E | F GA A

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
Chorus:
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path;
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

1 When I feel afraid, think I've lost my way,
still you're there right beside me,
and nothing will I fear as Iong as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.

2  I will not forget your love for me, and yet
my heart forever is wandering.
Jesus, be my guide and hold me to your side,
and I will love you to the end.
