The book contains 288 hymns, in 305 different arrangements. One (Adeste Fideles) is in Latin, while the rest of are in English. Over seventy are new texts or translations, and over 50 are set to new tunes - many of these new items were produced or commissioned specifically for the book.
The hymns are grouped into a main section (sorted alphabetically by first line of the text, a set of rounds, and an appendix of hymns which are used only on very specific occasions (eg national anthems and hymns about the patron saints in the book's target market), or which are
"firmly embedded in local Catholic traditions [but] which in the opinion of the Editors and many they consulted are swiftly passing out of use as taste changes"The editors consulted the earliest available sources of music scores, to avoid "perpetuation of doubtful versions". All hymns are printed with the crotchet as the standard pulse, but time-signatures, tempo-indications and expression marks are only given when a living composer or arranger has indicated them.
The book is still in-print, and copies are usually available ether directly from Faber, or via Amazon or other book-stores.
