It was written by English music-teacher, hymn-writer and accompanist Doreen E Newport (1927-2004), and originally published in 1967 in Dunblane Praises No 2. In 1969 it was published by Stainer & Bell Ltd, and today copyright is administered by Hope Publishing Co.
With meter 10.9.10.9, tunes it has been set to include:
- WE THANK YOU LORD - the original tune for the song, composed by Newport
- GENESIS by Graham Clifford Westcott (b 1947). This tune has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of G the first few notes are E EE B B B AG F A - and it is the most-often used tune.
The song is included in the BBC-produced children's hymn book Come and Praise, and this is the best source of sheet music for it.
