It has a Nihil Obstate from F E O'Loughlin, and Imprimi Potest from Bishop Gulielmus, Archbishop of Dublinen, Hiberniad Prímas in March 1915.
It is dedicated to Michal, Cardinal-Priest, Coarb of Patrick.
The foreward, titled "Et perpetuam rei memoriam" was written by Leslie and Collins is dated on the feast of St Fintan, called the Benedict of Ireland, in 1911. The Preface by W H Gratton Flood is dated on the feast of St Patrick, 1915.
There is a statement that "the death of John Stafford Collins .. necessitated a delay in the publication of this book ...".
The foreword states
"this hymnal has been prepared for schools and colleges, rather than for any popular use .. the compilers have no ambition than to add an Irish companion to the admirable Scottish Book of Hymns".and goes on to outline the compilers artistic ambitions, and the literary / poetic as well as liturgical criteria which they applied in selecting the hymns to include, and the desire to be both Catholic and National.
Only a little information about the copyright of individual tunes or hymn-text is provided - there are some brief comments toward the end of the Preface, including a statement that "the hymns of Newman, Faber, Caddell adn Bridges appear to be the common property of Christendom." Dr Gratton Flood's Preface also acknowledge some of the permissions he has received. All this is reflected in the Table of Contents below.
There is acknowledgement of the assistance of Monsignor Barnes, Dr Gratton Flood and Mr Leslie Toke.
A total of 152 hymns are included: 1 in French, 9 Latin, and the remaining 142 in English. A 4-part score, intended for organ, is given in most cases - for a couple of chant-based hymns, only a square-noted melody line is provided.
The book has
- A contents listing - by use
- An index of first lines (in English)
- An index of translations (by source language) - which may not be totally complete

The book is now out-of-print, and copies are only rarely available from second-hand suppliers.
