It was compiled by Kevin Mayhew Ltd, and published by the Dublin-based Kevin Mayhew (Ireland) Ltd.
Although it is not labelled as a Catholic hymn-book, the nature of Ireland at the time means that this is what it is. The foreword, by Fergus Clarke, Damian Lundy and Kevin Mayhew, says it is:
"an attempt to bring together in one book the best of old and familiar Catholic hymns with a fair representation of more popular recent contributions"It includes 285 hymns in English, 19 in Irish, 11 in Latin and two in mixed languages.
Printed by Eurpoean Cartons and Paper Printers Ltd, Dublin.
ISBN 086209 037 7
The book is now out-of-print, but copies are sometimes available from Amazon (UK and Ireland)
There were two editions: one words-only and one with an organ score. The contents listing below is from the words only edition, 1980 printing.
Indexed provided are:
- First lines (with a separate section for psalms and canticles, and mass settings)
- Uses (sections for Mass parts, sacraments, the Church Year and a few themes)
Although not stated, it can be inferred from the book's content that the "Irish Church" is the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland, rather than the Church of Ireland.
About the contents listing
Composer, author and copyright ownership are shown as they are recorded in the book, in accordance with this site's copyright policies. This means that the copyright information is not necessarily correct today - because some items may have changed status or have been incorrectly recorded in the book.An interesting feature of the book is the statement that "All or some part of the copyright of the following are vested in Kevin Mayhew Ltd" - and the listed hymns include a number for which both the lyrics and tune are clearly in the public domain due to their age. Most likely this means that the arrangement in the organ edition is a unique work for which Kevin Mayhew Ltd held the copyright at the time of publication.
Detail pages for some hymns in the book are linked from the titles, and more will be added as time and copyright permissions allow.. They may include:
- background information about the hymn,
- the full lyrics,
- downloadable PowerPoint slides of the words,
- sheet music (lead-sheet and/or guitar chords only),
- (links to) samples of the song.
If you own the copyright to any of the hymns in this book, and would like to grant permission for items to be made available here, or to provide a link to sources where they are still available for sale, please contact us.
